Good to know

Benefits and limitations of blood testing

A blood test offers valuable insight into your health, but it also has limitations. We set out both honestly, so you can make a well-considered choice.

Benefits

  • Early signals: deviations can become visible before you notice symptoms.
  • A complete picture in one draw: key values clearly together.
  • Interpreted by a doctor: you get context with your results, not just numbers.
  • Track your health over time: repeat easily and see changes.
  • Accessible: no referral needed, a draw at 800+ locations.

Points to consider

  • An abnormal value does not always mean something is wrong; sometimes it is normal for you or a recheck is needed.
  • A normal result does not rule out every condition.
  • Some findings may lead to unnecessary worry or follow-up testing.
  • A blood test is a snapshot in time and does not replace a medical diagnosis.
  • Do you have symptoms or doubts? Always discuss these with a doctor.

We value honest information. For independent information on the benefits and limitations of health tests, we are glad to refer you to the Dutch RIVM, pros and cons of health tests.

Veelgestelde vragen

Alles wat u wilt weten

Do I need to fast?

Yes, fasting is necessary for this package. We advise at least 10 hours fasting, water only. Early morning testing is most practical.

What is the best time to test?

Ideally, carry out a baseline measurement before starting. For follow-up, 3 to 6 months after starting is a common interval.

Does GLP-1 medication affect the results?

Yes, that is precisely the point. GLP-1 agonists typically reduce blood glucose, HbA1c, triglycerides, and LDL. Our doctor takes your medication use into account during interpretation.

How often should I test during a GLP-1 programme?

A baseline measurement before starting and a repeat after 3-6 months is a standard pattern. With long-term use, annual monitoring is worthwhile.

Can kidney function markers also be included?

Through Bloodworks Select you can add creatinine and eGFR (kidney function) to the package.

Is this package also worthwhile if I am not taking medication?

Yes, certainly. People losing weight through diet or lifestyle changes benefit from the same baseline profile.

Does Bloodworks prescribe medication?

No. Bloodworks carries out blood tests and provides doctor interpretation of your values. We do not prescribe medication and do not supervise medical treatment.

How quickly do I receive my results?

Typically within 2 business days of blood draw.
