Good to know

Benefits and limitations of blood testing

A blood test offers valuable insight into your health, but it also has limitations. We set out both honestly, so you can make a well-considered choice.

Benefits

  • Early signals: deviations can become visible before you notice symptoms.
  • A complete picture in one draw: key values clearly together.
  • Interpreted by a doctor: you get context with your results, not just numbers.
  • Track your health over time: repeat easily and see changes.
  • Accessible: no referral needed, a draw at 800+ locations.

Points to consider

  • An abnormal value does not always mean something is wrong; sometimes it is normal for you or a recheck is needed.
  • A normal result does not rule out every condition.
  • Some findings may lead to unnecessary worry or follow-up testing.
  • A blood test is a snapshot in time and does not replace a medical diagnosis.
  • Do you have symptoms or doubts? Always discuss these with a doctor.

We value honest information. For independent information on the benefits and limitations of health tests, we are glad to refer you to the Dutch RIVM, pros and cons of health tests.

Veelgestelde vragen

Alles wat u wilt weten

Do I need to fast?

Yes, for this package we advise fasting for 8 hours, particularly for magnesium and cortisol. Drink water only during this period.

What is the best time to have blood drawn?

We recommend having your blood drawn in the morning between 7 and 10 o'clock, cortisol is at its highest then and most suitable for interpretation.

How does this compare to a GP visit?

This package gives insight into values that can also be measured by your GP. You can use the report for your own insight or discuss it with your GP.

What if I take thyroid medication?

Thyroid medication affects TSH and T4. Please let us know so we can adjust the interpretation accordingly.

What if I take supplements?

Some supplements (especially high-dose B12 and biotin) can affect measurements. For a baseline measurement, we recommend stopping 1–2 weeks beforehand if possible.

How often should I have this measured?

A single measurement is sufficient for initial insight. For follow-up or when starting lifestyle interventions, re-testing after 3–6 months is common.

What if I want more specific markers?

Through Bloodworks Select you can add markers such as homocysteine, Holo-TC (active B12), or testosterone.

How quickly do I receive my results?

Typically within 2 business days of blood draw.
