Good to know

Benefits and limitations of blood testing

A blood test offers valuable insight into your health, but it also has limitations. We set out both honestly, so you can make a well-considered choice.

Benefits

  • Early signals: deviations can become visible before you notice symptoms.
  • A complete picture in one draw: key values clearly together.
  • Interpreted by a doctor: you get context with your results, not just numbers.
  • Track your health over time: repeat easily and see changes.
  • Accessible: no referral needed, a draw at 800+ locations.

Points to consider

  • An abnormal value does not always mean something is wrong; sometimes it is normal for you or a recheck is needed.
  • A normal result does not rule out every condition.
  • Some findings may lead to unnecessary worry or follow-up testing.
  • A blood test is a snapshot in time and does not replace a medical diagnosis.
  • Do you have symptoms or doubts? Always discuss these with a doctor.

We value honest information. For independent information on the benefits and limitations of health tests, we are glad to refer you to the Dutch RIVM, pros and cons of health tests.

Veelgestelde vragen

Alles wat u wilt weten

When in my cycle should I have blood drawn?

For most hormone measurements, day 3–5 of the cycle (counting from the first day of menstruation) is standard. For progesterone measurement in the second half of the cycle, day 21 (or 7 days before expected menstruation) can be informative. We provide context alongside your values in the report.

Do I need to fast?

Fasting is not required for hormones, but we recommend having your blood drawn in the morning between 8 and 10 o'clock for the most stable picture.

What if I take the pill or other hormonal contraception?

Hormonal contraception affects most of these values, the measurement will mainly reflect the effect of the medication rather than your natural cycle. Please let us know so we can take this into account.

Is this package suitable for men?

No, this package is designed for women. For men, the Essential Hormones Male package is available.

What if I am going through the menopause?

The package is also suitable for insight during perimenopause and menopause, elevated FSH and low oestradiol are characteristic of this phase. Our doctor provides explanation in the context of your situation.

How does this relate to my GP?

This package gives you insight into your values with personal doctor interpretation. You can use the report for your own understanding or bring it to conversations with your GP or gynaecologist.

What if I want to measure more specific hormones?

Through Bloodworks Select you can add additional markers such as AMH (ovarian reserve), DHEA-S, or testosterone.

How quickly do I receive my results?

Typically within 2 business days of blood draw, you will receive your report by email.
